Benefits of Using Insulated Wall Panels

Also classified as structural insulated panels, insulated wall panels are among the most widely used components in construction today. From low-rise residential buildings to expansive commercial complexes, they are recognised to be a smart option that provides a lot of advantages.

Are you considering constructing with them? Check out this list of some of the things that you can look forward to.

Insulated Wall panels

Superior Insulation Properties

Structural insulated panels have higher insulation scores compared to other types of insulating components. And this superior performance does not only look good on paper. In the real world where factors such as air infiltration can dampen the effectiveness of an insulating material, insulated wall panels outperform fibreglass insulation.

One study that affirmed this was done by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The study looked at the insulating performance of two homes: one with SIPs, the other with fibreglass and wood frames, using a blow door test. Their results indicated that the home with SIPs was five times more airtight than the other home.

Weather Protection

Insulated wall panels can also stand up to harsher weather conditions longer than their counterparts. In fact, they are reported to be particularly effective in resisting hurricanes. They have also been found to withstand seismic activity better.

When it comes to indoor comfort, they also have good scores. Structural insulated panels are also considered to be great air barriers, which is good news for people who live in drafty regions. Under laboratory tests, SIPs have proven to be two to three times more airtight than homes with fibreglass insulation and wooden frames.

Energy Efficiency

Because of their high insulating and air barrier capacities, insulated wall panels also help keep the temperatures inside your home normalised. As a result, your home does not have to draw more from your heating or cooling systems to achieve the right level of comfort. If you are also concerned about sustainability, SIPs are an ideal choice! In the US, in particular, buildings and homes that have been installed with SIPs are considered to be sustainable properties.

In addition, their material composition is not a bane to the planet’s resources. Foam and oriented strand boards – their two major components – do not take up a lot of raw materials to produce. Some scraps that are generated during the manufacturing process can be recycled back into new products. And they have to be pre-formed in a controlled environment, which means that there will be less mess to clean up and sort at your installation site.
